Jesse Terry is the only Anishinabe musher currently competing in the John Beargrease sled dog marathon. The marathon, which is about 300 miles long, was founded in honor of John Beargrease, an Anishinabe man who delivered mail with a sled dog team on same route in Northern Minnesota in the 1800s. “As an Anishinabe person, my connection to the land is part of who I am," Terry said. "Mushing is just another extension of this idea and creates connection to the land and to my culture." This project was photographed between 2023 and 2025 with first publication being in 2025. Terry had to determine the extent of a stiff shoulder and eventually choose to drop Orvie Jarvis from the team at that checkpoint, as to not risk injuring him. Teams start with twelve sled dogs and must cross the finish line with a minimum of eight, allowing mushers to "drop" injured or fatigued dogs. Terry's dogs are family members to him and he treats each one with extreme care and respect.
