He returned to his small hometown to live. His legacy has helped keep the town alive. Several locations in town have become part of a national park honoring Carter. To further ensure the town’s survival, Carter and former first lady, Rosalynn Carter decided to be buried near their home in order to keep visitors coming to the town after they are gone. 2023 brought attention to Plains when it was announced that President Carter had entered hospice care and later in the year when Rossalyn passed away.
