Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians have suffered life-changing injuries, like amputations and brain damage. After undergoing treatment, what comes next is often a gruelling rehabilitation process. For many, that process is long and hard. Some have to relearn how to walk again or master basic tasks -- brushing teeth, holding a fork or spoon. Others want to return to a favourite sport. Many more face the daunting task of overcoming psychological wounds that make getting through the day a nightmarish struggle. The United Nations estimates that more than 18,500 people have been injured since Russian troops began their invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. That number is likely much, much higher. As the war enters its third year -- and with no end in sight -- the question of how a country still in the grips of conflict heals at the same time is one thousands of Ukrainians are grappling with. "You can't live in the past. You have to live for the future," said, 29-year-old Vasyl Grytsenko, who lost a leg fighting in east Ukraine and underwent physical therapy.

As for November 2023, The United Nations estimated that at least 10,000 civilians, including more than 560 children, have been killed and more than 18,500 people have been injured since Russian troops began their invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. That the number is likely much, much higher. As for the military, neither Ukraine nor Russia gives official statistics of the total combat losses. It is believed that the number stands at hundreds of thousands.

Russia and Ukraine blamed each other for its destruction; however, the dam was under the full control of Russian forces, with evidence suggesting that Russia most likely blew it up from within.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on early 24th February 2022 hoping to quickly seize the whole country, especially its capital. Instead, the Russian Kyiv offensive met stiff resistance, and by early April 2022, it was forced to withdraw from the surrounding region and later from some other areas of Ukraine. In the time since fighting has largely concentrated in the east and south of the country, but many Ukrainian cities that are far from the frontline remain the target of regular Russian air strikes.

People attend a vigil after a deadly shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S. March 29, 2023. On March 27 there was a mass shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee. Six peopleÑthree students and three staffÑwere killed at random. The following week hundreds of students, parents and teachers marched to the Capitol building and held demonstrations demanding action by the legislature to toughen gun laws. The Republicans who control state government rejected these calls. On March 30, Representatives Jones, Pearson and Johnson Ñ whose districts are in Nashville, Knoxville and Memphis, the stateÕs three largest cities Ñ interrupted the legislature by chanting ÒNo action, no peaceÓ on the House floor, and legislative proceedings were forced to a halt. In response to these actions, on April 6th the Republican supermajority voted to expel Rep. Jones and Pearson, who are black, but not to expel Rep. Johnson, who is white. In less than a week both Representatives were reinstated following votes in their respective districts. On May 8, Gov. Bill Lee called for a special session to address public safety and gun reform. In June the Governor received 15 thousand letters in less than a week when he asked the public to weigh in on the upcoming special session. During the August session advocacy groups and protesters were at the State Capitol daily culminating with no meaningful legislation passed.

In March 2023, a former student at the Covenant School in Nashville killed three 9-year-old children and three staff members, and Democratic Representatives Jones and Pearson were briefly expelled for leading a protest for gun control on the House of Representatives floor. "I always have hope. I wouldn't be in this business if I didn't hope that people would listen," said Johnson, who also is running for the U.S. Senate. "And we know that 80% of Tennesseans want to see gun sense legislation, 70% want red flag laws, 80% want safe storage laws. At some point the super majority has to start listening to the people. Because it will affect their elections."

Spiking rates of homelessness, violent crime and drug overdoses are overwhelming the public safety infrastructure. In Portland, a record-breaking number of daily emergencies has strained every part of the system: 911 hold times have quintupled, firefighters work overtime to handle more overdoses than actual fires, and each week there are no ambulances left to respond to hundreds of medical emergencies. What has arrived into the void are thousands of private security guards hired by private businesses in what has become one of the country’s fastest-growing industries. Police respond to a man who died of a suspected overdose in downtown Portland, OR on July 26, 2023. CONTEST STORY CAPTION: July 26, 2023. The medical examiner taped off the entrance to a parking garage after a person was found dead of a suspected overdose. There had been 22 reported overdoses on Portland’s public sidewalks in the previous 36 hours. An overdose can indicate that a deadly batch of drugs is circulating in the neighborhood, so the incident sent Bock to check on people nearby who were nodding out in doorways or actively smoking fentanyl. He nudged people awake to make sure they were okay. He’s revived at least 20 drug users in the last few years, and he always carries eight doses of naloxone. Based on the body’s temperature, this victim had likely been dead for more than an hour, which meant dozens of commuters walked by his body during rush hour before one stopped to check his breathing and call 911.

Bock speaks with Jade Wilder to try to calm her down, after he'd received a call that said she had tried to take another woman’s child. Both Bock and the child's mother called 911 to try to get help from the police, but it took the police more than an hour to respond to the call. The central precinct typically needs at least 17 officers on afternoon patrol to keep pace with the record volume of 911 calls, but that day the precinct was down to just eight officers patrolling an area of 41 square miles with more than 200,000 residents.
