On February 6, 2023, southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria are hit by two powerful earthquakes. More than 100,000 buildings collapse or become uninhabitable, and millions of people are affected by the destruction. In Turkey alone, more than 50,000 people die and more than 100,000 are injured. The sounds of weeping and sorrow mix with the noise from the excavators working nonstop on one of Kahramanmaraş’ old commercial streets where all the buildings have collapsed. The area is packed with relatives and friends of victims still hidden in the rubble. They are comforting each other, while waiting for their loved ones to be dug out. As time passes, the hope of rescuing anyone alive dwindles. Most must be content with the certainty that comes when they are asked to identify the bodies. 10.02.2023
