Boston, Massachusetts -- 8/29/21 -- Jay’dha Rackard (C) and her fellow members of the Girlz of Imani Dance Troupe throw carnations into the Boston Harbor as the names enslaved members of Boston’s oldest churches are read during the dedication of Boston’s Middle Passage Port Marker which acknowledges the city’s history of slavery and honors the Africans who were forced into the transatlantic trade on voyages known as the Middle Passage.

Asylum seekers often turn themselves into the American authorities to initiate a formal request for political asylum. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data, 2021 was a record for children and teenagers crossing the border without their parents. By March, 8500 children who had crossed the border alone were currently housed in Department of Health and Human Services shelters, while others 3,500 more were waiting at Border Patrol stations for beds in those shelters to open up.
