2021 Online Visual Presentation – 2020 Election

In the midst of a global pandemic, economic downfall and increasing political division, our multimedia team wanted to know the most important issues affecting the lives of Central Texans approaching the monumental 2020 November election. In the weeks leading up to the election, we followed six Central Texans: a small business owner, a young educator, a women’s rights advocate, a healthcare worker, a civil rights activist and an urban design student. Collectively, their stories give viewers a look into the ways policy, politics and the pandemic have affected diverse communities, and their hopes for the future following the election.

Los Angeles County, home to some 10 million people, made numerous changes to its voting rules in 2020. These included a major overhaul of polling places, increased access to mail-in ballots and new registration deadlines. As confusion and angst about the upcoming election spread, the L.A. Times embarked on a project to spread word of these changes to as many residents as possible, with the goal of ensuring that everyone was able to participate in the vote. To that end, The Times produced a series of voter guide videos in 14 languages most commonly spoken in L.A. County: English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Russian, Thai, Tagalog, Hindi, Korean, Armenian, Farsi, Vietnamese and Khmer.
