Story Summary: Barack Obama, the junior Senator from Illinois, became the first African-American President of the United States after a grueling two year campaign in which he mobilized over a million volunteers, raised an estimated $650 million in campaign funds and captured the imaginations of millions of young voters. His campaign events sometimes looked more like rock concerts than rallies. His audiences, which grew more and more immense as the campaign drew to a close, were made of members of every racial, ethnic, religious and age group imaginable. His ascent to the presidency over those long months, signaled a sea change in American politics.

Democratic Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) continued speaking despite constant rain at a campaign rally the Widener University Main Quad in Chester, PA Tusday October 28, 2008. His opponent John McCain cancled his event that day due to inclement weather.
