Weekly Assignment Winner

“Disaster on Ice”
Jason Lamb, University of Missouri-Columbia

Judges liked “Disaster on Ice” because the video journalist did a good job telling this spot news story. Capturing the action and reactions as they unfold in dangerous or challenging situations is the essence of being a news photographer. Rarely do college students get this opportunity. This story was well shot. The tripod was used when possible to get solid images. Yet the video journalist got off the tripod to capture the natural moments and sounds as they happened. A very good effort by the video journalist to tell the story of people dealing with an ice storm.

In-Depth Winners (tie)

Learning From Andy
Kat Keene Hogue
“The Back To School Staple”
Jason Lamb, University of Missouri-Columbia

The judges recognized both stories, because they were different styles and both done well for student level. “Learning From Andy” was produced for the internet. There were some great quality images, sounds and moments. The effort was strong in following the family of a mentally handicapped swimmer. There was one blaring jumpcut at the beginning...but overall, a very nice insight into their lives combined with nice videography. The other winner, “The Back To School Staple” was a news story produced for a local TV news program. The style is more quick. But this video journalist took a number of images, got a lot of good sound, spent additional time with a family at home, and told a good visual story.
