Judges’ comments

Tim Griffis

This was a very easy choice. “In the Game” was marvelous bit of TV. It had layers upon layers rich sound and story that kept evolving. The judges loved the natural moments and interactions.

“Earthman” was new spin on a beer salesman at baseball game. A ton of sound made this a one worthy of second. Overall the quality of entry was pretty good. The judge felt there were a few too many cancer sufferers playing some sort of recreational sports.

Bob Gould

“In the Game” was clearly the best in this category. Boyd Huppert and Jonathan Malat scored another hit with this story. This story is about a group of disabled kids playing hockey on sleds and it is amazing. Plenty of great moments, excellent photography and editing. The story took twists and turns and kept building. Congrats on another tremendous slice-of-life piece.

2nd place went to “Earthman,” a story about a guy who has a unique way of selling beer at Coors field. He’s a great character and the photojournalist captured the essence of the character. Great moments. Great weaving of the sound and video to make for a great story.

We chose not to award a 3rd place, but instead decided to award 2 honorable mentions as we felt these two were good, but not quite as good as the other two.

Jeff Roberts

Having almost fifty entries in this category, it took us a while narrowing it down to a handful. Not all ball sports entered here with subjects including rock climbing, hiking, biking, sailing and extreme fighting.

The winner “In The Game” followed a disabled boy whose parents always dreamed of him playing hockey. Lots of great little moments in this piece helped carry the story pulled you in.

“Earthman” was an admirable people story of the beer guy at the game. Lots of great sound made this a winner. Another touching piece, “Angels In The Outfield” had beautiful colorful shots at dusk and the editing flowed throughout leading your eye to the moments.

Preston Rudie

“In the Game” was an easy choice in this category. The story was fundamentally sound from a photojournalist’s stand point and very well written. Like most stories this reporter does, “In The Game” has several layers and advances in a clear and logical manner.

Nellie Stinson

Sports Feature had a great variety of stories and I enjoyed watching the finalists because they gave a wide array of emotions.

I cheered for the kids in “A League of Their Own,” cringed when Law (“The Law According to Mike”) got pummeled and really wanted “Earthman” to bring me a beer. But the winner captured the human spirit. The photographer captured the moments that made me smile and his images are etched in my mind. This was a solid piece and a great story.
