A fairly new category still, yet gaining more entries as more stations adopted this approach to covering the news. The winner was clear. She used more shot variety and editing to tell a very complex issue about the falling US dollar vs. the euro.
- Bob Gould
2 of the 3 finalist pieces were produced by the same person and she clearly has great storytelling skills. In the piece, “falling dollar” (which we awarded 1st place), she shot a multi-part standup that was extremely well-executed, especially for doing it by herself. It had great natural sound, excellent pacing and tight writing.
The piece called, “James Orso” was about a boxer and his son…Had some nice natural moments, although we questioned how some of the reaction shots were shot.
It’s too bad we didn’t see more entries in this category. I think this is a growing area of news and I would expect that this category will grow as well in the coming years.
- Jeff Roberts
A refreshing look at what the "one man band" can turn out. Number one had it all, nice pictures with a great pace on what could have been another boring economy story. Not usually a highlight of a story for me, the multipart standup had us looking a second time to count the cuts. Story number 2 and 8 were both deserving finalist spots in the category.
- Preston Rudie
“Falling Dollar” was easily the winner in my book. The reporter/photographer did an excellent job weaving natural sound (knuckles, register, etc) and tight shots throughout. Also, great pacing and an outstanding stand-up!!! Especially for someone who shot it themselves.
This is an example for every person working by themselves that complex, sequenced stand-ups are possible if you take the time! Major kudos to her!!!! One other note, I liked the reporter’s rhythm in her track.
- Nellie Stinson
I never thought that I would say this for an NPPA entry but the stand-up is primarily why I voted for this story. Her stand-up consisted of one master shot of her slicing a sandwich. This was then “cut up” with numerous nat close-ups of the sandwich being sliced. The VJ made it look like there was another photographer there to shoot the close-ups.
