Judges’ comments

With Spot News-Under Deadline you want to viewer to feel the emotion, the adrenalin and the intensity of the event. “School Bus Accident” was the best example of all three. I felt the editor took me to the scene, and the event was actually happening all around me. In some of the other entries, I would have like to have seen a better match of the pace and story.
Keep in mind, even though it’s Spot News, it doesn’t always equate to quick edits. Let the audience see what’s happening. In at least one case, letting the video roll would have had a greater impact than the triple-cut of nats.

The winner “SCHOOL BUS” demonstrated good solid skills. Attention was paid to pacing, Nat sound, solid non-shaking camera, screen direction and eye movement. A great job. No other contestant came close.
Honors given to “CRAZY DAY”, who would have placed higher except for a few lapses; not using edits to direct the eye and not covering some jerky lens mistakes. Disappointing that there were so few entries submitted. Maybe the category needs to be about what an editor can accomplish within an hour time period as opposed to only breaking news that happens a couple hours before a scheduled newscast.
