Judges’ comments

Lori Allred

Dang, this was tough!!! We debated a couple hours…. ending in a draw. Then got input from the photographers, who were judging downstairs. We agreed with their comments, but didn’t agree with each other as to who should come in first.

Back to the drawing board. We looked at each piece many times. Dissected them edit-by-edit, every transition… every eye movement,…every audio mix…then, argued some more.

It came down to one edit. One shot selection that we couldn’t blame on the script or shots available. I believe the editor unwittingly made an editorial comment that could lead the viewer to conclude an outcome that wasn’t accurate. A single shot that confused the story-just for a moment. Yes, it came down to one shot.

“The Law According to Mike” stacked some moments, showed restraint waiting for moments, and had some memorable moments. The lead-in made me curious. If done differently, it could have lost me in the first twenty seconds.

“Canine Chaos” we had to watch a second time just for fun. It did have some unnecessary dissolves towards the end, but for the most part, did a nice job with the pacing.

One the hardest judging sessions so far this week was Sports Feature. Both “ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD” and “THE LAW ACCORDING TO MIKE” were equally deserving of First place. We wrestled back and forth for nearly two hours watching the top two finalists over and over and over and over. Both pieces had driving well paced nat sound. Both had surprises. Both directed the eye thru the frame. In the end the final decision came down editorially to just one shot in each piece.

“THE LAW ACCORDING TO MIKE” garners a first place and “ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD” places second. Third place goes to the fun, fast paced “CANINE CHAOS” (a must see for dog lovers). Softball sister gains Honors.
