For the most part, the simple effects were used appropriately. There were a few pieces with reference to file video, where I thought the file would have been more effective in B/W. Also, ask yourself why you use an effect. If the answer is “it looks cool,” you may want to skip the effect. The winner, “Sentence Please” had great pacing. You could tell the editor used every great little cutaway he could find, and it really worked. From the ladies hands crocheting to the deep sighs, it all fell together beautifully. It was so entertaining we watched it a second time just for fun.

The winner "SENTENCE PLEASE” about a spelling bee puts a smile on the face of all who view it. So tightly woven the judges frequently replay it as measure of story telling excellence.

“MERRY CHRISTMAS” tugs at the heartstrings. The yearly assignment of serving Christmas dinner to the homeless at a shelter is elevated to an artful cacophony of quick discernable nat sound and fast eye directed quick cuts.

“NONE OF US WANTS TO BE HERE” had good pace, steady camera, and excellent quick cutting but lost the viewer on a few occasions by a lack of eye movement between shots.
