Judges’ comments

Wow….34 entries, and again-the winners really stood out. We watched several of them more than once, making sure the effects truly added to the story. “Tipping Point” had a great energy, was fun to watch, and the effects actually made it a better piece. “Bottles of Bacteria” and “Inflatable” did much of the same-both great pieces, but “Tipping Point” kicked it up a notch. There were many pieces that I felt were good-clean-solid pieces. They didn’t go over board with the effects, but at the same time, just didn’t match the caliber of the winning entries.

I’m glad to see so many entries in this category. Unfortunately, in approximately eighty percent of the entries, the effects actually got in the way of the story the piece was trying to tell. But, oh, what great entries were in the other twenty percent! Here, the editors' art of telling a non visual story with mere scraps of elements shown brightly. The hardest and closest decisions of the day were in this category.

“TIPPING POINT” tipped it self over the edge with its’ wonderful use of word play (words, and definitions effected into the spot to add pace and reinforce the central theme. ‘BOTTLES OF BACTERIA” used the speed/motion effect to keep our interest in this consumer piece. “INFLATABLES” was quick paced and used the ANIMATTE effect to create incredibly smooth transition between seasons.

We wished we could have given out 8 Honorable mentions. But, alas, I’ll just give shout outs to RUTH’S STORY, LURKS IN THE WOODS, INTEXICATED, and EMS TAXI.
