Mary McHugh mourns her slain fiance Sgt. James Regan at the Arlington National Cemetery May 27, 2007, Memorial Day weekend. Regan, a U.S. Army Ranger from Long Island, was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq in February, and this was the first time McHugh had visited the grave since the funeral. When he died, Regan was on his fourth combat deployment - twice in Afghanistan and twice in Iraq.

Judges' Comments

  • Judge Dudley Brooks said, The first place winning entry is a photographer taking you and a journey of the war in Iraq. And the journey takes the view on several journeys. The photographer was successful in showing the viewer his complete vision.

Judge Deanne Fitzmaurice said, The first place entry started with a powerful opening single photograph and the portfolio unfolds around that.

Judge Mary Calvert said, We liked the amount of images entered in this first place winning entry and it was very well edited. Each story was complete.

Judge Dudley Brooks said, The second place winning entry contained a lot of variety. The humanity this person used to capture the images was done really well. The weaker point of this portfolio was its single photographs.

Judge Mary Calvert said, Third place winning entry contained picture stories where really different. This photographer had a very good idea of which issues to photograph.
