Every year at the end of June, Vodou pilgrims make the journey to the Grotto de Saint Francis de Assisi, situated near the small Haitian town of Saint-Michel de l’Atalaye. The cave, first inhabited by Taino indians, has become a place of pilgrimage for followers of the Vodou faith. A pilgrim enters the mouth of the cave, holding aloft a chicken, which she has brought as a sacrificial offering to one of the Vodou spirits, or “loa” as they are known.
