Many of the root causes of northward migration from Mexico and Central America can be found in any small village. This picture story looks at some of the root causes of migration by looking at one such town, Sauta, in the Western Mexican state of Nayarit where over 50% of the adult population has migrated north.

- The Roanoke Times’ “Land of Opportunity” took first place in the News Photo Gallery for Smaller Affiliated Sites. Josh’s images were able to capture the intimacy of the community and their daily lives of their small Mexican town. It was the clear winner of this category. Time’s “Tiger Territory” displayed several beautiful images but failed to capture the familiarity of the people as “Land of Opportunity.”
