Judges' comments

The overall quality that you would expect to see on a SOY entry tape was missing in this category. Even the winning entry under whelmed me, there certainly were some quality work here, but the staff really needs to work on honing their storytelling skills. After the winning entry and the runner up, there was a steep drop off.

The winning entry showcased quality shooting and solid storytelling. But on the whole, this category was disappointing. In fact, the top station in small market would have clearly beaten the top two selections in this category.

Regina McCombs

The medium-size markets could take their cue from some of the smaller markets, where we saw more consistently good work. There were high points on several tapes, but little that showed up on a regular basis.

Mark Morache

This category could have been stronger. The high points were high, but the low points were very low. A number of entries could have been stronger if they had left 3 or 4 stories off of the tape. Many stories could have been better if they cut to the chase a little sooner, and not meandered with long flowery beginnings.

Erica Simpson

I was disappointed in the quality of all the entries in this category. I strongly feel that the staff at the winning station still has a lot to learn technically and stylistically.
