Judges' comments

Is doing it by yourself in the field and in the edit bay lead to the best story telling? The results say no. The top three stories were solid and well done, after the winners the drop off was significant.

Jay Korff

The winners in this emerging category cobbled together stories that exhibited poise and sophistication. The quality of the remaining entries dropped off significantly.

Regina McCombs

This was a tough category to know where to set the bar. A number of truly great photojournalists have essentially been one-man-bands, but most of those who entered in this were young journalists getting started. We ended up with an assortment of spot news, features and general news that’s a bit of apples and oranges, on top of the fact that none of us are thrilled with idea of the proliferation of vjs in the first place.

Mark Morache

Should the bar be lowered in this category because the stories are done solo? Should the bar be lowered because the journalists turn their stories on a daily basis? It’s interesting to note that some of the previous NPPA POYs have been “one man bands”. Would the winners in this category have been able to stand up in the straight photography categories? Should they? These were things we discussed before awarding this category, and while we wanted to keep the bar high, we didn’t want to penalize the best of what we saw. The best stories were complete stories that made us feel something. However this field is wide open and someone with good visual discipline and a strong sense of story could walk away with this one next year.
