The 1st Place story, "She is So Lucky" used seamless natural sound and great shot selection to tell the story of a car-in-a-river story. The editing was tight and the story structure was sound. A very solid, well-crafted piece from start to finish.
"Oh My Gosh" really stood out because of the way the editor used a crying woman as a recurring character throughout the piece. As the story begins, we see and hear her crying as her apartment building burns and, during the course of the story, we see and hear her several more times, until the editor bookends the piece with her sad lament. Excellently-woven natural sound and great shot selection help to propel the story.
In "Get Out", the editor chose to use sounds of apartment residents evacuating an asbsestos-contaminated apartment to punctuate the reporter's sentences and paragraphs. That technique really helped to pace the story, which mostly contained wide and medium shots.
"Eastern Gilford High School Fire" was an all-encompassing story of a disastrous fire. The editor's use of good natural sound and video effectively helped tell the story of how the students and community dealt with the loss of their school. What really hurt this story's execution, however, was the use of so many pace-killing dissolves near the end of the piece. Eliminating most, if not all of them would've moved this story to the next level.
Overall, this category was pretty good. However, the four winning entries really stood out from the pack. Plenty of pace-setting natural sound and good shot variety set them apart from their competitors.

All of the finalists had good sequencing and pacing with the edits, "She is so Lucky" really kept up the momentum. You felt like you were there.
"Oh Mi Gosh" had good emotion throughout that was punctuated in the last shot.
"Get Out" had a good news value and was told in an interesting way.
