There is currently 26 children ranging in ages from 8 to 19 at the Hutton Settlement. The children at Hutton cannot be adopted and they are encouraged to keep in contact with their families, many of who still have legal guardianship. Most of the children at Hutton are mentally and physically stable and just need a place to stay. Some children have parents addicted to drugs or a terminally ill guardian that can no longer provide for them. Other children suffer from disorders that don’t allow them to live at home. Hutton raises the children in a cottage run by house parents and the children can stay until they graduate from high school. In many cases the children pursue higher education and Hutton generally offers scholarships to the students. The Hutton settlement accepts no government aid; it is funded by a private endowment established by Levi Hutton. In 2003, the last available year of public record, the Hutton Settlement’s assets were $14.2 million.
