CHERNOBYL - JANUARY 30: 93 year old Zinayida Trofimivna Huzienko talks to her dog inside of her home in the village of Ilintsi on February 1, 2006 near Chernobyl, Ukraine. Zinayida being one of the eldest woman in the Forbidden Zone lives alone. Over 300 villagers live in the forbidden Exclusion Zone, after having returned to live in their own homes after the disaster. After the disaster they were misplaced and relocated to many locations over the Soviet Union. The ‘Samosele’ or self settlers, a name given to them by authorities, are living as before, living off the fertile albeit radioactive land. They harvest the land growing wheat, mushrooms, onions, beetroot and their own home brew vodka called ‘Samahonka.’ Scientists estimate that Prypyat and the surrounding area will not be safe for human habitation for several centuries. Scientists estimate that the most dangerous radioactive elements will take up to 900 years to decay sufficiently to render the area safe.
