CHERNOBYL - FEBRUARY 01: 76 year old Mariya Shelan poses for a portrait inside her home in the village of Teremtsi on February 1, 2006 near Chernobyl, Ukraine. Mariya has lost both her sons aged 46 and 51 in the last few year. She believes that the deaths are direclty related to the Chernobyl disaster and radiation. Mariya is looking to accept an apartment under the new housing scheme that President Yuschenko has outlined, in order to help relocate the returned villagers from the Forbidden Zone. Mariya also a big fan of boxing would like to see the famous Ukrainian boxer Vitali Klitschko to become President of Ukraine. Over 300 villagers live in the forbidden Exclusion Zone, after having returned to live in their own homes after the disaster. After the disaster they were misplaced and relocated to many locations over the Soviet Union. The ‘Samosele’ or self settlers, a name given to them by authorities, are living as before, living off the fertile albeit radioactive land. They harvest the land growing wheat, mushrooms, onions, beetroot and their own home brew vodka called ‘Samahonka.’ Scientists estimate that Prypyat and the surrounding area will not be safe for human habitation for several centuries. Scientists estimate that the most dangerous radioactive elements will take up to 900 years to decay sufficiently to render the area safe.
