Active volcano Mount Belinda belches a fresh puff of ash. Mount Belinda, a sub-glacial volcano, has been active since September 2005, releasing over a half million cubic meters of lava. New land is forming as the lava flows to the sea, expanding the island by at least 100 acres. One of Earth’s smallest and fastest tectonic plates moves the islands nearly 3 inches per year. Our crew of 8 were the only eye witnesses to this dramatic event, which is being monitored by volcanologists via satellite images.
