Chinstrap penguins perched on top of an iceberg near Candlemas Island are buffeted by 20 knot winds. Blue icebergs are far older and more compressed than white icebergs. With little air left between the crystals of ice, they emit an other-worldly blue glow.

Every austral summer millions of Chinstrap penguins arrive on the South Sandwich Islands to breed. Having spent the past seven months at sea, they will spend the next five months on these remote islands of the South Scotia Sea, off the coast of Antarctica. One of the islands is home to the largest penguin colony in the world, with 2 million breeding adults. Uninhabited by humans, the eleven islands have changed little since they were discovered by Captain James Cook in 1775. Rough seas, severe storms, remoteness and ice protect the islands from all but the most determined visitors. It took our crew of eight a week to reach the islands aboard the 65-foot yacht, “Golden Fleece.” For 5 weeks, we saw no other humans. The islands remind us of Cook’s world, a time when all the Earth was brimming with wildlife.
