CALL TO DUTY

STORY DESCRIPTION: The continued conflict in Iraq brought another round of tearful goodbyes for families at Fort Hood, TX, one of the largest military installations in the world. The 1st Cavalry Division answered their call to duty in 2006, the second such deployment since 2002. For soldiers in the division, their trip means 12 months in the deserts of the Middle East. For their families, another term of e-mails, missed holidays and celebrations and weeks of anxiety, praying for their safety. One military spouse joked that the deployments have become similar to a Texas football season: each of the last four years, soldiers have left throughout the fall. The communities surrounding Fort Hood feel the strain as well. Teachers of students with deployed parents become surrogates, business owners hang yellow ribbons in their storefronts and citizens ignore the clamorings of popular opinion against the war to show their support.

Joan Jacobs of Grand Prairie, TX, kisses her son, Spc. Stephen Jacobs, as he leaves with the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division for deployment to Iraq from Fort Hood, TX, on Monday, Oct. 30, 2006. At only 19-years-old, Spc. Jacobs was off to his first tour of duty in Iraq, leaving his mother all alone to wait for his return.
