1st Place: Varanasi: City on the Ganges; Photographer Tyler Hicks of The New York Times visited Varanasi, India, the holy city on the western bank of the Ganges River.
Judge's Comments (Deanne): We thought this was a strong set of photos that gave us an understanding of the spiritual importance of the river to these people as well as its importance in terms of their daily lives set against the severe pollution and health risks of the river. It was beautifully photographed and gave us a feel for the people and place. The audio narrative was well written, and the photos and audio combined to raise the level of storytelling.
