3rd Place: Building a Dream; The United Arab Emirates employs around 1.6 million foreign workers, who make up 80% of the population. The majority are from south Asia and work in the construction boom. Typically, workers sign 2 year contracts with contractors. Trade unions are illegal. Journalists are discouraged from looking too closely at working conditions. The average monthly wage is around US$300. Workers are housed in camps in the desert. In 2004 in Dubai alone over 800 workers died in work-related incidents.
Judge's Comments (Andrew): 3rd place was awarded to “Building a Dream” by J.D. Perkins. This was a tough decision and I think the judges were split with awarding this third place. Most agreed that the collection of images lacked an actual story but were drawn to the imagery, style, and technique.
