Judge's Comments (Drew)

As the first multimedia category judged, viewing these entries launched an excellent discussion on the challenges of visual storytelling when presented with multiple media. The panel recognized the importance that powerful and compelling photojournalism hold for the reader, and those remained the core elements in the judging process. Also balancing the requirements of audio, video and the over all usability of the package were crucial as well.

With that, “Hope in Hell” from National Geographic was awarded first place in the Best National Disaster in the Multimedia category. The panel all agreed that the photos from this package were striking and powerful. Adding a voice to the story allowed the viewer to understand the issue at a much larger scale. The judges also recognize and appreciated that the design of the package allowed for either a passive or active experience.
