As the first multimedia category judged, viewing these entries launched an excellent discussion on the challenges of visual storytelling when presented with multiple media. The panel recognized the importance that powerful and compelling photojournalism hold for the reader, and those remained the core elements in the judging process. Also balancing the requirements of audio, video and the over all usability of the package were crucial as well.
“Exiled from Bank Street” from USAToday.com received 2nd place for this category and also sparked the conversation in the balance of photo storytelling and the medium of multimedia. The judges agreed that the photos were not what we expected, but this piece was raised into the 2nd place position because of several other reasons including it’s smart decision to focus on a single block of the affected area in New Orleans.
