Judges' comments
Lou Davis, “The top two in this category were totally different yet set a new standard for excellence in a story,” Lou Davis said. “Both required major differences in approach and both delivered! Great Job!”
“The team category was a chance for guys to really show that they can take a back seat and work with others and do it well,” Kevin Labrecque said. “The winners really did a good job in conveying their stories through multiple cameras even when all were not present in the same area. Good job to the winners.”
“The First Place Team, ‘Gift Of Life,’ was an incredible piece of photojournalism,” Ray Meints said. “Kudo's to all the photographers who took part. It is an incredible behind the scenes real life and death look at the emotion or organ donation. ‘Gift Of Life’ shows us the emotion of saying goodbye to a loved one, the process of organ donation, and the joy of receiving a second chance at life. My first question was, ‘How did they get the access to this personal process?’”
“While we as judges are awarding the photographers for their efforts, the teamwork here goes far beyond the actions of just the photographers. It is a true collaboration of everyone in the newsroom (management, producers, reporters, editors, etc.), the hospitals and doctors, and most importantly, the families. Great job!”
“Second Place is ‘Derby Darlings.’ This is a fun piece. Very well shot, edited and written. It will make you laugh. Another excellent example of quality teamwork!”
“There were two tremendous entries in this category,” Greg Stotelmyer said. “Both were near flawless efforts. Our vote on the winner was split. The winner, ‘Gift of Life,’ was a story featuring emotion through incredible access into an area normally chained and locked by HIPPA rules, that of organ donation. The runner up, ‘Derby Darlings,’ was a close up, crash ‘em up look at four sisters in a demolition derby. Obviously very different stories, but both well executed.”
“I voted for ‘Derby Darlings.’ Perhaps it’s a reaction to the fact that emotion is winning, every time, over light hearted in this week’s judging. Are the stories more important? Of course they are. But, that does not mean they are better efforts or epitomize the work of the photographer or photographers more. In this case, both teams delivered.
“I felt the constant delivery of chuckles through great shots and well chosen sound bites made it the best entry from start to finish. That being said, ‘Gift of Life’ delivered well shot moments rarely, if ever, accessed by photo journalists. Both deserve First, only one could receive.”
“It was the most emotional and amazing story I have ever seen, with incredible access that made ‘Gift of Life’ the winning entry,” Ernesto Torres said. “This was truly a team effort because of all the elements that needed to shot, edited, and put together in order to tell such an amazing story. It was a very difficult shoot because of the emotion and yet all the photojournalist did a great job of not getting in the way.”
“Second place, ‘Derby Darlings’ was an example of great team work and effort to make it a wonderful story with awesome natural sound, photography, editing, and writing.”
