Judges' comments

“I’ve always said that on any given day in our profession, anyone could out “tell” and out shoot” anyone else,” Lou Davis said. “What a difference a day made for this category. Both stations did a great job of filling the categories and telling memorable stories. It was tight. Very tight!”

“Once we looked at the station air checks from February 22, 2006 it was clear who came closer to emulating their stations philosophy and who the clear winner was.

On any given day.”

“An important note: Just because your news content of the day is a little drab, doesn’t mean that your pictures have less value. Rock solid pictures off the tripod, that didn’t shake or move, made the difference.”

“This category came down to watching the airchecks,” Kevin Labrecque said. “I would say to everyone in a small market: Be on your A-game at all times. We were split on two of the stations until we went to the broadcasts and that sealed the deal. Congratulations to the winners.”

Ray Meints said, “What impressed me most about the first place winner was the level of consistency. All of the entries had both good storytelling skills AND technical skills. I was impressed with the consistent use of the tripod (as it should be). There were a wide variety of shots and each entry was solid. Definitely deserving of first place!”

“In this category, the winning pick hinged on the air check and the station's photography philosophy (part of the entry requirements). To be honest, without those elements, the order of finish could have been much different. The quality of work displayed in the air check that was submitted, was consistent with the quality of work demonstrated in the compilation tape.”

“I was also very impressed with the stations photography philosophy. Their motto was: ‘Favor the moment and maintain the structure.’ They added, “We recognize a story's visual structure is crucial for our audience to understand, but the moments we capture are what they remember.’” Congratulations to the Small Market Station of the Year!”

Greg Stotelmyer said, “We witnessed good efforts, strong mechanics and a lot of potential for growth by the photographers in the small market category. There was a strong effort at story telling. One way to advance that effort is to reduce the amount of reporter track in a story. We saw too many examples of reporters being too wordy. The photographers illustrated great promise. Please, please reporters, let their pictures and sound tell the stories, not you.”

Ernesto Torres, “The tape from the Alaska station was very solid from top to bottom, it had a little of everything in it. It showed a great deal of promise and hope for future POY’s and great storytellers.”
