Judges' comments
“One competitive market, the top two have very competitive photo staffs!” Lou Davis said. “One had a trend of letting the moments happen on tape moving the stories forward. The other, a consistent, clean presentation throughout the tape. The winner distanced themselves with more creativity in their storytelling/pictures which pushed them over the top.”
“Like the small market SOY competition, on any given day. It will be interesting to see how future bragging rights develop in the Triad of North Carolina. Keep up the good work everyone!”
“An important note: One of the SOY finalists had to take a trip to Dairy Queen due to the technicality of the entry running too long. When you see talented storytellers not get the full recognition they deserve its very disappointing. Read the rules!”
Kevin Labrecque said, “There was one entrant in my opinion that would have won based solely on photography but when it came down to the way the story was told and the editing it all kind of fell apart. The winners did do a good job of making me feel as if I were there.”
Ray Meints said, “Medium market, overall, was not as strong as I'd have hoped. While I did see many good stories, consistency was lacking in this category. I saw too many jump cuts, shaky shots, poor pacing, pans and zoom, and bad composition. For a station to compete for SOY next year, technical skills need to be much sharper, more moments, and SOY entries should show a consistency from top to bottom.
“The winner, WGHP-TV, in my opinion was the station that I considered the most consistently sound.”
Greg Stotelmyer said, “Oops. It was going to be a close vote. Then one of the entries came in five minutes over the limit. The sad thing is there was no need for 15 stories in that station’s entry. A couple of them hindered the entry, especially the rugby story. I was ready to overlook the jump cuts that worried other judges. I saw promise in what was being put on tape by the photographers. Again, showing consistency was a key factor in the decision.’
Ernesto Torres said, “The wining station had a real strong and solid tape that had very good storytelling and creative storytelling to make all of there stories compelling, and interesting. The word I would use to describe this entry would be ‘Creativity.” It had the all elements. It had a couple of good examples of how to tell a much better and strong story.”
