Judges' comments
“The category winners managed to evoke a lot of emotion out of me,” Kevin Labrecque said. “Whether hard news or a softer feature they all got to me on a personal level. The photography staff’s of these stations should be proud of the work that they put out. Congratulations.”
Ray Meints said, “Consistency was the key to winning large market station of the year. Great stories, good moments, and wonderful photography were also key ingredients. This year’s SOY had it all. Spot news entries clearly demonstrated the ability of the photo staff to function in a stressful situation. In ‘Chaos Erupted’ a story about two police officers who were stabbed, the photographer was right there, and captured all the key elements. Two of my favorite stories were ‘Demolition Darlings’ and ‘Gift of Life.’ Good moments... touching news stories... and entertaining features... Great work!”
Greg Stotelmyer said, “Five of the 13 entries caught my eye as possible winners. In the end, it was consistency that made the difference. The winner had moments in each story, illustrated well through the photographers’ eyes. Watch any of these entries and you see great examples of how to tell stories.”
Ernesto Torres said, “Consistency. Consistency was the thing that made First place winner KARE-TV stand above the rest. It had everything you need to have in storytelling from top to bottom, it had creativity, high production, photography, editing, and captured all the moments in all the stories that made it the one that won and represents everything great about storytelling.”
Lou Davis excused himself from this category since he once worked for one of the finalists.
