Judges' comments
“Most of us are under ‘deadline pressure’ everyday, but we do not do it as well as some of the entries in this category this year,” Lou Davis said. “The ones that made it to the top had clean presentations technically and told a story. The winner had a surprise, the facts and pics that illustrated those facts. All in a fast paced presentation that ‘lived’ on tape and gave us the experience of being on the scene. The winning entry is something that every photojournalist should strive to emulate on Breaking News.”
“The winning entry did a really great job in shooting and editing I think we should all strive to do this on a daily basis,” Kevin Labrecque said. “My one complaint about this category is that 8 hours may be too much time. The majority of the entries that were viewed did not really have the WOW Factor that I was looking for in an eight-hour story. Congratulations to the winners.”
“First place, ‘Over the Edge,’ was great coverage of a spot news situation,” Ray Meints said. “Good use of tripod, good composition, good quality sound and use of natural sound. Very solid.”
“There was a clear, unanimous winner in this category of 50 entries. ‘Over the Edge’ was the only story that didn’t have a glaring flaw,” Greg Stotelmyer said. “Nice use of natural sounds throughout for pacing with good reaction sound. The trooper bite explaining what happened could have been left out. Also, nice effort in ‘Life Saving Senator’ to bring a story alive that was over by the time you began. Hopefully second is a deserving payback for enduring that lawmaker’s bothersome laugh as you edited the story.”
“The ‘La Conchita Mud Slide’ photographer was awarded honorable mention for his work in a tense situation despite a poor performance by the reporter. It took the reporter an excruciating 45 seconds in his live shot open to get to the dramatic video.”
“The winning story, ‘Over the edge,’ was the one that stood out among all the entries. It had the great examples of storytelling, creatively, surprises, to make a very compiling and interesting story under deadline,” Ernesto Torres said.
