Registering Yourself for the Contest
Everyone must obtain an identification code to enter Best of Photojournalism 2006. Please note that:
- you must register even if you entered in a previous year
- you cannot simply re-use last year's entry code
Obtaining the code is easy: simply complete the online Contest Registration Form, and you will be given your unique Contest Identification Code within minutes.
Your Contest Identification Code will serve as your ‘name’ for the contest: you must include this 8-digit code on the Tape Entry Form for each clip you enter.
Note that if you are entering more than one division of the Best of Photojournalism competition (for example, TV Photography and Web Sites), you can use the same Contest Identification Code for all divisions.
Entry Tape Preparation
- Entries will only be accepted on Beta SP or DVCPro.
- Each entry must be on an individual cassette and each cassette must be submitted in its own container. Cassettes containing more than one entry will be disqualified.
- Eliminate any slate or title showing your name, station or city at the beginning of each entry. There should be nothing on the tape but the entry. Failure to do so will disqualify the entry. Deadline photography entries & live shots permit station reference.
- Each tape should be cued so when the play button is depressed the entry material begins.
- The audio channels must be mixed on the entry tape.

TV Reporting
The NPPA Photojournalism Award for Reporting is to honor those reporters and field producers who, in collaboration with a television photojournalist, produce outstanding visual stories. Entrants must submit a compilation of 3 packages they have written from the individual TV Photography categories listed below. This is not only a writing category: the judges will be looking at the overall visual storytelling and how the reporter/field producer contributed to the quality.
The compilation tape may not exceed 20 minutes and can include live shots. There is no penalty if a story is shot by more than one photographer.
The judges may award a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place at their discretion.
There is no fee for non-members entering the NPPA Photojournalism Award for Reporting category.

Special Awards
There are two special awards that may be granted, at the judges’ discretion, to stories that show special merit. Participants do not specifically enter for these awards: the winners will be chosen from among the full set of entries in all categories.
Judges’ Choice Award
The judges of this year’s competition will have the option of giving a “Judges’ Choice Award” to the story they feel best exemplifies the ideals of television photojournalism.
