Judges' comments

“We had some tough choices to make in this category, and I hope everyone out there has an understanding as to why Sandy and I took the direction that we did,” Ron Kabele said. “We tried to differentiate whether a story was an actual, unique sports story as opposed to a feature story that had a sports-related subject attached to it.”

“Please don’t be too disappointed. Some really good stories didn’t place, and it was simply that we tried to be fair to the folks who work in sports day- in and day- out, as opposed to the folks who filled up their two-story quota in other categories, and ‘Sports’ just happened to be available.

“On that note, the story about wrestling was a true, PURE sports story. And it was put together so well. The second place entry (‘Bounce Back Season’) was an excellent example of a sports highlight/montage story, which was both exciting and involving. I know how hard it is to edit that stuff, because I used to (try to) do it myself.

“The story about Wheelchair Rugby was fantastic AND sports, centric. It was phenomenally well edited, too. Like the wrestling story, it immersed me into the sport and into the action. And I really enjoyed learning about why these people do what they do. I was truly motivated to be less of a whiner.

“It’s too bad we don’t have a category for Sports Feature, because three stories really stood out. ‘He’s Brendan,’ ‘Big Foot,’ and ‘Le Parkour’ deserve big kudos. These stories may have placed in another category like Editing Feature (Photographer) or Editing Feature (editor). I hope these stories get recognized in other categories.

Judge Sandy Spencer said, “The Sports Editing category possessed some very well done feature pieces. Because this category is specifically targeted for sports, the following winners are stories that focused on the sport or an outcome of the sport.”

“‘Rumble in Your Body’ is the winner in the sports editing category. This package captured the true flavor of high school wrestling. The editor artfully wove in natural sound breaks to create drama that surrounds the sport. This package felt more like a sports piece rather than a total feature piece because the editor was cognizant of the fact that the wresting meet was the story rather than the fan reactions.”

“‘Bounce Back Season’ is a superb mix of effects and music to tell the story of the Broncos football season. The effects created excitement to reflect the Broncos success as AFC western divisional champs. The use of titling helped to reinforce their climb to the top.”
