Judges' comments
"This was the first category in which I was somewhat disappointed in the quality of the entries," Ron Kabele said. "You all did show a lot of effort, but that work didn't always translate on screen. In over half the entries, if I had been a home viewer, I would have tuned out or changed the channel."
"Believe me; I know how hard it is to put together a longer or more complicated story. It's what I get to do for a living, and I love it. But when you're entering contests at this level, the little details that you let slide on a day, to, day basis really stand out in this competition. Some of the big problems I saw over and over again were rough audio, inconsistent audio levels (between reporter's track and natural sound), inappropriate use of music, and lousy endings.
"Don't get me wrong. It's extremely important to work hard and learn how to CRAFT these types of stories, because over the long run they're going to help you all become better producers and better storytellers. If you want more input and control over the stories that you do, you're going to have to show that you're up to the task. Believe me, if you can prove yourself to your superiors, the opportunities will come flooding in.
Sandy Spencer said, "'Joe's Smile' is the winner of the 2005 News Feature/Editor Category. Sequential editing to the subject playing music can be a difficult task. The editor did a great job of successfully sequencing Joe playing the piano. He wove in natural sound breaks as a means of transition without overdoing the effects."
"Placing a very close Second in this category was 'Climbing the Grand.' The scenery was breathtaking in this piece. The editor achieved the emotional payoff through shot selection, pacing and the addition of appropriate music."
