Judges' comments
“I was disappointed in the number of entries in this category,” Ron Kabele said. “Only one entry really captivated me, and that was the long, form news program about eBay. But I was also somewhat conflicted cause the program was such a ‘bigger’ production than the local stories and specials entered in this category.
“Nevertheless, the editor of eBay showed tremendous ability, especially in that his editing was extremely transparent – including use of music, sense of pacing, and shot selection.
Sandy Spencer said, “The Magazine Editing category is a wonderful way to showcase an editor’s talents. The long format lends itself to more creativity and visual story telling.
“‘The eBay Effect: Inside a Worldwide Obsession’ won First place in the Magazine Editing category. The effects, appropriate use of music and overall storytelling made this piece the one to beat. I enjoyed the opening montage and well crafted segments.
“‘Colorado’s Most Endangered Places’ placed Second in the category. I liked the attention to detail including the font backgrounds that were created to simulate weathered wood. Nice pacing and appropriate use of music helped the piece flow.
“‘The Party’s Over’ placed a very close third. The mark of a great editor is when she is able to use limited video and make it look and-TV, or feel different throughout the piece. She did a great job with placement of music and effects to tell the story. Amazing how much video was obtained from this news event that made this story come alive. Production value was very high.
