Judges' comments
“Most of the stories in the Editors EFX category left me cold,” Ron Kabele said. “Creating special effects for stories is perhaps one of the hardest things to do, since you’re just as likely to detract from the story as add to it.”
“One particular entry caused me a bit of consternation. Between all the flying video and music and graphics, I had problems following the story. Actually, to be honest, many of these stories were a bit overdone. A lot of this overuse will eventually (hopefully) go away as people become more comfortable, experienced, and mature with their non, linear systems.
“An excellent example of great (and tasteful) use of effects was the story of a minister suspected of child abuse (among other things). If you get a chance, check out how the editor integrated such a huge amount of SFX so seamlessly into the story.
‘“The Few, the Proud, the Elderly’ talked about senior citizens receiving military literature through the mail. I had to watch the story a second time, because the editor did such a good job of making the effects transparent. I hardly noticed any effects on the first run, through.”
Judge Sandy Spencer said, “ There’s a fine line between just the right use and placement of an effect and the over use of an effect that can literally kill a story. EFX should be used to enhance a story. They should assist in the telling of the story, punctuate a point, or help evoke an emotion. All too often, the misuse of efx can distract from the storytelling of a piece and inevitably get in the way of the message.
“In ‘Church (Part 2),’ the editor artfully used effects to evoke emotion. He successfully incorporated titling to help the viewer feel the message of the Pastor and his disciples. His use of superimposed graphics to describe the abuse was powerful and very well done. The editor hit a home run with his masterful use of effects and editing.
“‘Clearing His Name: The Trial and Hanging of Adelbert Goheen’ placed second in the Editors EFX 2005 category. This story was wonderfully edited. The use of the film effect was a nice touch. The transition, dissolve between old and new buildings and roads was phenomenal. Between the transitions and film effect, the story was able to transport the viewer from past to present without being distracting or confusing.
“‘Pieces of History’ received honorable mention in this category. The editor definitely had a vision for this story. His skill and EFX editing gave this otherwise video poor story fantastic visual appeal.”
