The hotel's first floors were destroyed by the high winds and storm surge of Hurricane Katrina. A janitor and his family stayed after they decided it was too late to try to flee the area. The family moved from this room, to a second story room, barely escaping the storm surge, estimated to be over 10 feet high in this area. The family is surviving on handouts from the National Guard.
