John Oates, a friend of the family, comforts Darell early on the morning of March 5th as he says goodbye to his wife. Their oldest son Jeremy is getting married in south Texas and he had planned for Maryanne to accompany him, but as her condition worsened he knew it wasn't to be. Unsure if she will be alive when he returns, yet sticking by his promise to Jeremy to be at the wedding, the distress of leaving her causes Darell to weep over Maryanne's sleeping form.
