The poorest district of Budapest is 220 years old and is the most densely populated area of the city. The buildings and the streets have fallen into disrepair over the years. Although very many buildings have been declared uninhabitable, people still live in them. District 8 is mostly populated by people on the margins of society, and is home to one of Hungary's largest Gypsy communities. Economically inactive population makes up more than 60% of all inhabitants. A downward social spiral over the past few decades has created a widening gap between District 8 and the other parts of the city. Usually, the people of Budapest give a wide berth to this ill-reputed area and try to forget about it.
