"Widows of the River"

Widows and other pilgrims dunk themselves in the Holy Ganges River—a river heavily polluted by sewage runoff, cremation remains and factory silk-dye.

Hindus go to the city of Varanasi, India, on the banks of the Ganges River, to be cleansed before they die and cremated after. While men pilgrimage to the city to die, their wives are often left in the city with little to no resources—resorting to living in charity houses or on the streets. They have learned to live in the shadows of daily life, to go unnoticed and are expected to devote the remainder of their lives to the memory of their husbands, without whom, according to their traditions, life loses meaning. Now they're waiting in Varanasi, waiting for the Ganges to bless them with death.
