Aslan left Grozny in 1999 after his house was destroyed in a raid by Russian soldiers. Nothing is left but the foundations. He applied for compensation but received nothing and doesn't believe that he will receive it. “Now people disappear without a trace and there is no way of finding out who is behind the abductions. The authorities say there is no war and people can go home and receive compensation. But once you go home there is no compensation and the questions begin. Identity checks in the middle of the night, passports get confiscated thus making survival and movement extremely difficult.” The last time he visited Grozny to investigate the possibility of receiving compensation he was stopped with his teenage son at a checkpoint and arrested. Without knowing why they were detained they were kept in a detention centre for 13 days, beaten and humiliated before being released without an explanation. He lives in Promzhilbaza camp in the Sleptsovskaya region with his 14 children. Southern Russia. April 2005.
