Four years after the U.S. invaded Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks, Kabul remains a city of daily struggle. It is a place where life is hard and many promises have yet to be met. In the afterglow of two national elections, there are also signs of hope in Kabul. Record numbers of children, including girls are returning to rebuilt schools. The nation is forging a multi-ethnic army. Many institutions are getting back on their feet. Yet, Afghanistan remains the sixth least developed country in the world. The economy is again largely based on narcotics exports and domestic use of opium and heroin is increasing. Women's rights remain dismal. Millions of refugees have returned, tripling the population of Kabul. Unemployment is estimated at as high as 50 percent.
