The 9.0 earthquake that caused the tsunami occured off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Consequently, in an unprecedented natural catastrophe, Sumatra was the hardest hit. From the provincial capital of Banda Aceh, south to Meulaboh, the devastation was of biblical proportions. Many tens of thousands of people lost their lives and entire villages were eradicatedf. In the larger towns and cities, the destruction was so vast, it resembled a nuclear holocaust, not of fire, but of water.
A woman who was killed by the tsunami was buried by her family on the seashore where she had lived.
