Shipwrecking facilities in Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2004-2005. The majority of retired ships end up in the wrecking yards of southern Asia. Chittagong, the largest second city in Bangladesh, has become one of the most important shipbreaking centres. The facilities occupy about ten kilometers of a flat sandy beach. The work is done almost entirely with bare hands in extremely hard contitions. Thousands of people manually take apart fragments of plating, pull out cables, and extract rivets. Most of this material is recovered and recycled into construction steel.
