"Daily Life in War-Torn Northern Uganda" - Local children watch as former members of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) are given amnesty during a forgiveness ceremony conducted at the paramount chief's house. The ceremony involves the former rebels stepping on an egg to be welcomed back into the community by the village chiefs. Since the egg has no eyes,no ears and no mouth it symbolizes entire forgiveness of any and all atrocities committed while the rebels were with the LRA.
Nearly 2 million people have been forced to flee their homes and up to 12,000 people have been killed in two decades of Northern UgandaÕs civil war, with many more dying from disease and malnutrition as a direct result of the conflict between the LordÕs Resistance Army rebels and the Ugandan government. The LordÕs Resistance Army is estimated to have kidnapped over 20,000 children for use as soldiers and sex slaves. The constant strain of living in fear has taken its toll on the people of Northern Uganda.
