Story Background- Russia claims the distinction of being the coldest country in the world. It has twice as much territory above the Arctic Circle as Canada, ten times as much as Alaska, and fifteen times as much as Norway, Sweden, and Finland combined. Day after day, the coldest spot on the globe is usually somewhere in Russia. Not surprisingly, the lowest temperature ever recorded outside Antarctica was in Russia.ÊOne third of RussiaÕs population live and work in inhospitable climatic conditions where air temperatures average -30 degrees Celsius. Northern European Russia, where these photographs were taken, runs from the Gulf of Finland to the Arctic Barents Sea. Winter in this northern territory finds a region shrouded in darkness nearly 24 hours a day, a phenomenon known as Polyarnye Nochi, or Polar Nights. Between mid-December and mid-January the sun does not come up and there is only a faint glow of light visible around midday. The period of polar nights is reportedly very taxing on the human body and can trigger depression in many people. This feature is a series of landscapes illustrating this unique weather phenomenon.
